“Sonny” extends to 2020

Walters has signed a contract extension until the end of the 2020 season. Fremantle forward Michael Walters puts through an incredible snap from the boundary

Fremantle forward Michael Walters has agreed to terms for a two-year extension, which will see him contracted through to the end of season 2020.

Taken with pick 53 in the 2008 National Draft, the 26-year-old was previously contracted until the end of the 2018 season, and in February was voted into the leadership group for the first time.

An exciting small forward, Walters has been a valuable contributor up front, leading Fremantle’s goal kicking in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Playing 94 games over the past eight seasons, Walters has kicked 177 goals and sits sixth in Fremantle’s all-time goal kicking list, just one goal behind Clive Waterhouse.

General manager of list management Brad Lloyd said Walters had excelled on the back of his work ethic, and set an important example as a part of Fremantle’s leadership group.

“It’s really exciting news for the club,” Lloyd said.

“Michael came in as a fairly late draft pick in 2008, but he’s worked extremely hard at his football to become a really high level player in the AFL.

“He performs week in week out and he’s always around and impacting key moments. He’s a player that is really important to us on the field and as a leader at our football club.”
