Nat Fyfe has credited his young team after a heart-stopping, two-point win against Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

After dominating the third quarter Freo went into the final term with a 22-point lead and had a fierce battle with Melbourne in the fourth quarter to walk away with the four points.

Speaking to Fox Footy after the game, Fyfe acknowledged the win was one of Freo’s best.

“It was a quality win, they came late and there was momentum swings all day but credit to the group (for) the way we ground it out,” Fyfe told Fox Footy.

“We’ve had a great summer so we knew we had the fitness to go, but to Melbourne’s credit they played really well right to the end.”

Coming off a 16-point win against reigning premiers Western Bulldogs last weekend, Fyfe said the players understood the importance of running out the game.

“We know there is no magic in footy, last weekend we ground away until the last minute and got the win,” Fyfe said.

“We knew that was what it was going to take, and essentially that’s what happened.”

The captain said the win was a confidence boost for the team, in particular the younger players.

“Winning games of footy is healthy to build that belief,” he said.

“We’re a new group, we’ve got eight or nine new players and we’re still gelling, but to get wins on the road is handy.”
