As a crucial part of a promising group of up and coming players, Lachie Weller has stated his ambitions to develop his leadership qualities.

Weller stood tall in Fremantle’s 100-point loss to Adelaide last Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

The 21-year-old racked up season high totals of 30 disposals, nine contested possessions and two goals.

The versatile defender’s strong performance was one of a handful from Fremantle’s younger players.

Connor Blakely, 21, collected a career-high 12 clearances while Darcy Tucker, 20, picked up 20 disposals and kicked two goals.

As the game quickly fell out of Fremantle’s reach, Weller said it was important to continue to push and improve.

“It was a disappointing game, especially our form during the past month to six weeks leading in,” Weller said.

“When you’re out there you want to try and play to the end. You shouldn’t look at the scoreboard.”

Weller added that he was learning a lot from Fremantle’s leadership group of Nat Fyfe, David Mundy, Aaron Sandilands, Lachie Neale, Michael Walters and Lee Spurr.

“I think (a leader) is what you strive to be,” Weller said.

“We’ve got really strong leaders that the club at the moment. They’re doing a great job and it’s helping us younger players a lot.

Weller said he was enjoying developing within a group of 12 players aged between 21 and 22 years old on Freo’s list.

“We’re all quite close outside of the club,”

“I think it’s looking really good moving forward and there’s a lot of enthusiasm around the club and around the younger boys.”
