If Freo managed to get over the line in their nine-point loss to St Kilda on Sunday at Domain Stadium, Michael Walters would have been the unanimous choice as the match-winner.

Instead, Walters was left to deal with a heartbreaking loss for the second straight week, with six goals and 32 possessions to his name.

Walters left nothing to chance against the Saints the week following his last-gasp attempt missed that left Freo with a two-point loss to Geelong.

The 26-year-old led the way as a forward and a midfielder. He gathered 18 contested possessions from his 32 touches, leading Freo in both categories while also collecting three clearances, six marks and three inside 50s.

Walters said that he again finds himself looking to move on from the disappointment so Freo can bounce back against their next opponent – North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium next Sunday.

“It’s not a good feeling,” said Walters about kicking six goals in a losing effort.

“Especially after last week, but we just need to move on and think about the next moment.”

“We have the Kangaroos next week we need to put that disappointment behind us.

“We’re going to go over today’s game vigorously. We need to move on to the next moment and get better form the mistakes we’ve made.”

Walters highlighted that turnovers were crucial in Freo’s loss, with Fremantle conceding 53 points from 75 turnovers in the clash.

“There’s a lot to learn from this game,” Walters said.

“In a game situation, (it’s about) keeping the ball in tight, keeping it close and not just blazing away.

“There was a few times when our leadership could have been better where we turned it over through the corridor when really we should have played with a bit more composure.

“There’s a lot to learn from this game but action is king and the boys really put in some really good action.

“We payed some good footy today.”

Walters paid tribute to Freo’s younger players, highlighting the efforts of Brennan Cox and Lachie Weller.

In Cox’s third AFL game, the versatile forward/defender showed signs of developing into a crucial key position player, taking six marks, two contested, and kicking his first AFL goal.

Cox wasn’t without his chances, with four scoring shots to his name.

“Last week and this week were really tough results but we can see some growth,” Walters said.

“The leaders really led out there today and the younger boys, Cox, Lachie Weller guys like that stood up and we just need them to.

“Throughout the week, they’ll continue on building their brand and keep playing their role for the team.”
