The long-awaited return of Harley Bennell provided Fremantle a rare highlight in their 104-point loss against Richmond on Sunday.

In what was a painful farewell to Domain Stadium, Bennell kicked two opening quarter goals – showing glimpses of the talent that saw the 24-year-old taken with pick no.2 in the 2010 National Draft.

His first goal came after winning a holding the ball decision while his second came from a snap 35 metres out.

"It’s not the result we wanted but it’s good to be back playing AFL with the boys,” Bennell said.

“We’ll recover up well and look to bounce back next week.”

Playing his first AFL game in 722 days, Bennell’s time was managed on his Freo debutPrimarily a midfielder, Bennell featured in Freo’s forwardline with six disposals and three tackles to go with his two majors.

“The intensity was high, it was a tough test,” Bennell said.

“My fitness will, hopefully, get better but the game’s still quick and a lot different from WAFL.”

Bennell said the coming off-season will be crucial as he works to get back to his best.

“I’ll need a big summer under my belt,” Bennell said.

“But I’ll come back refreshed and I’ll need a big pre-season.”

In his post-match media conference, senior coach Ross Lyon said Bennell showed his ability to provide Fremantle something extra on the field.

“I think Harley Bennell showed what he’s capable of doing,” Lyon said.

“He just looked all-class and high end.

“He handled the ball well, he kicked well and took his opportunities. We need to get more of that in the team.”

Bennell thanked his family for their support after they greeted him in the rooms post-game.

“It’s good to have that support from family,” Bennell said.

“For my dad to come down today and watch, it was good to have him there and it’s good to have my family here all the supporters as well."
