In the lead up to round one of the NAB AFL Women’s competition, second year player Belinda Smith said there was a feeling of excitement amongst her teammates.

Fremantle play the Western Bulldogs on Saturday 4 February at VU Whitten Oval.

“We’re really excited at the moment and just can’t wait to get over to Melbourne,” she said.

“We’re definitely out for redemption this year…and are hoping for a better season than 2017.”

With a number of new recruits drafted to her club this year, Smith said she was impressed with how they were progressing.

“They are settling in really well and helping drive the standards over here, which is really good to see, and we’ve definitely got a few standouts,” she said.

In an approach to integrate both teams, five of the senior men’s players have been assisting with coaching the women during the pre-season.

Smith said the knowledge they have provided has been “vital”.

“Just everything, their training routines, their life outside football and then little tips and hints during training and in the game,” she said.

With their first game fast approaching, Smith said a key focus of her team has been recovery.

“Training hard and recovering as well and making sure that our recovery has really been elite and that our bodies are in the best possible nick for the game”
