Injured forward Matt Taberner feels ready to navigate the road to recovery and get back on the field for Fremantle later in the season.

Taberner broke a metatarsal in his foot during Fremantle’s 54-point win against the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in round five.

The key forward remains on crutches and a moon boot with the next phase of his recovery set to commence later this month.

“The last couple of weeks has been a rest period where I’m giving my foot a chance to recover and get that healing process going,” Taberner said.

“Training duties have been pretty light so far. I’m restricted with my crutches and then I can put a little bit of weight on my foot in a moon boot.

“From there I can slowly start to put some load through my foot so I can walk and have a slight jog.

“Then I can get that load back in my foot and get my legs adjusted to the training loads again.”

Taberner was in impressive form prior to going down with injury, kicking six goals and taking 16 contested marks from the opening five games of the season.

Known as one of Fremantle’s most methodical players on the training track, Taberner feels he is capable of ensuring he can get back to full fitness and build on his form.

“You never want to miss any footy,” Taberner said.

“I was only back for the first five rounds so it was unfortunate to sustain the injury but I guess that’s a part of football.

“I definitely have confidence now and getting back, I think I can prepare.

“I’m a good preparer so I’ll be able to come back fit and ready to go and hopefully play a part in the second half of the season.”
