An impressive defensive performance from Joel Hamling has allowed Fremantle to take some positives from a 28-point loss to North Melbourne on Sunday at Optus Stadium.

Hamling felt he merely ‘played his role’ as he limited the Coleman-medal leading Ben Brown to two goals.

Brown’s second goal came in the dying seconds following a 50 metre penalty, with Hamling keeping the 200cm forward at bay for the bulk of the afternoon.

Three intercept marks and nine spoils highlighted Hamling’s efforts to keep Freo in the contest despite North dominating the inside 50 count 60 to 46.

“Brown’s a star, he’s a great player and he’s leading the Coleman,” Hamling said.

“I tried to nullify him and he kicked a few goals. All players are going to do that but I felt I played my role.

“There’s always some improvement there. I thought my teammates really helped me out a lot and they’re always helping me out with the big guys.”

Hamling paid tribute to fellow backman Luke Ryan with the 22-year-old continuing his impressive run of form.

For the third consecutive game, Ryan pulled in 10 marks while collecting 20 disposals or more, with his 28 touches a career best from his 20 games in the AFL.

“You’d never know he’s only played 20 games,” Hamling said.

“He’s a star really. He’s getting better each week, his leadership’s there and he’s continuing to grow.”
