Nathan Wilson is looking forward to representing Fremantle for the first time in an Indigenous jumper when Freo take on Collingwood on Sunday.

With Collingwood in good form – winning three of their past four games – Wilson expects an electric atmosphere for Sir Doug Nicholls Round at the MCG.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s not at home but, hopefully, we can get a big away crowd over there as I think the Collingwood fans will come out and show their support,” Wilson said.

“That’s where September is. I played there in a prelim last year (with GWS) and didn’t get the job done but I hope we can go over and get the win against Collingwood.”

Wilson has joined 10 other Indigenous players on Fremantle’s AFL list.

While the defender is enjoying the strong Indigenous culture at the club he believes this round is about bringing the whole team together.

“There’s a strong culture here and we try to stick together but we also want to include everyone together as a team,” Wilson said.

“We’ve all got a good bond as a team.”

Wilson was pleased with how the group performed during Wednesday’s training session, with a final session scheduled for Friday ahead of the team’s flight to Melbourne.

“The boys were sharp. We had a few things to work on from North Melbourne so Ross and the coaching staff put it on us to improve and I thought the boys looked sharp,” Wilson said.

“It’s going to be a hard contest, we’ll need to win the contested ball and spread them and use the ball well to make them defend.”

On the home front, Wilson is loving life as a new father to son Jayce.

“The little fella’s going well,” Wilson said.

“He’s about four months old now, so he’s getting to get to the stage where he’s starting to laugh and make some noises.

“He’s starting to do a little bit but I can’t wait for the next couple of months when he’s running around.”
