Nat Fyfe has emerged in good spirits after injuring his hamstring in Fremantle’s 55-point loss to Brisbane, according to fellow leader Michael Walters.

Fremantle endured a tough day at Optus Stadium, with both Fyfe and Aaron Sandilands (calf) succumbing to injury.

Sandilands didn’t start the game after hurting his calf in the warm-up and was replaced by emergency Ryan Nyhuis.

Brisbane got the jump early with a four goal to one opening term and the task became all the more harder with Fyfe coming off in the second quarter.

Walters said he was disappointed to see Fremantle fall behind early after with senior coach Ross Lyon putting an emphasis on his players starting strongly.

“It was disappointing. Brisbane came out very fast,” Walters said.

“We just couldn’t keep up. Ross alluded to it during the week that we had to be on our game coming off the bye.

“Most teams lost over the weekend after the bye and we knew that, but Brisbane came over and they played a hell of a game.”

Walters didn’t want to make excuses about the loss of Sandilands and Fyfe, with Fremantle struggling to cover for their star players.

“We can’t just rely on Aaron or Fyfey,” Walters said.

“We need to make sure that as a group we step up and play our role.

“It starts from the front with the leaders and that drip feeds down. We can’t just rely on Sandi and Fyfe.”

Despite being ruled out for the game, Fyfe came out onto the ground to talk with the players after half time and was also present at the three quarter time huddle.

“Fyfe’s in good spirits. That’s what makes him such a good leader,” Walters said.

“He was encouraging us on the bench telling us to keep going and giving us things to work on during the game. He can lead from the front even if he’s not playing.”
