In the midst of the downpour that hit Perth on Wednesday afternoon, the girls from Rossmoyne Junior Football Club were all but ready for a coaching clinic with Freo players Lachie Neale, Joel Hamling, Andrew Brayshaw and Tom North.

The only problem was that it was wet, cold and their home ground at Shelley Park was partially submerged.

Instead, it was decided to do a one-hour Q&A indoors, which lasted all but five minutes until Andrew Brayshaw asked his own question of the girls.

“Who would rather be training?” Brayshaw said.

The decision was unanimous, and the players put the girls through their paces in conditions that resembled the Gold Coast vs North Melbourne game in Cairns in round one.

“It’s been great fun,” North said.

“Just to see their enthusiasm for playing, it’s definitely rubbed off on the rest of us.”

The visit was one of a series of clinics Freo players run at schools and football clubs around WA each year.

This week’s clinics focused on visits to junior girls football clubs and North said he’s enjoyed watching women’s football take off in recent years.

“We really enjoy sharing our knowledge and passing on a few tips for the kids,” North said.

“I’m sure they have as much fun as we do, too.

“It’s been great to see women’s footy growing every year and to have these younger girls coming through.

“I’d expect it’s going to be a big league in a few years as a result which is great for them and great for football.”
