The 2018 NAB AFL Draft threw Perth College into a spin on Tuesday morning when Phys Ed teacher Courtney Stubbs realised her dream of playing football at the highest level.

Stubbs watched the draft with her year 11 students on Tuesday morning and her selection at no.39 by Fremantle set off euphoric scenes at the all-girls school.

“What an incredible experience that was. It was overwhelming and a bit surreal but I’m very excited to be drafted,” Stubbs said.

The athletic midfielder is set to add plenty of pace to Fremantle’s engine room.

Stubbs first played football at school but switched to basketball and athletics. With the AFLW kicking off in 2017, Stubbs re-commenced her football career with the Coastal Titans, now Subiaco, in the WAWFL.

“I used to play at high school but I thought AFLW was a great opportunity to come back and potentially get picked, so it’s a dream come true today,” Stubbs said.

“There’s going to be some hard training and I can’t wait to get involved with all the girls.

“I’m just ready to step up a notch and experience it all at that next level. I’m really excited about the challenge and what’s to come.”

The teacher is excited about the prospect of becoming the student in her first pre-season at Fremantle.

Fremantle assistant coach Amy Lavell - Stubb’s co-worker at Perth College – will be one of a number of people she’ll have for guidance at her new club.

“There’s going to be some hard training and I can’t wait to get involved with all the girls,” Stubbs said.

“I’m just ready to step up a notch and get amongst it and experience it all at that next level. I’m really excited about the challenge and what’s to come.

“Dana Hooker and Hayley Miller – they’re both (Subiaco) teammates and they’re both really inspirational people who I love to learn from.

“I love to show that aggression that Hayley has. I played with Dana at high school so it will be really great to learn from her and her experiences.”
