Kiara Bowers justified her nickname ‘Turbo’ in a 2km time trial on Wednesday night as Fremantle’s AFLW team returned to training ahead of the 2019 season.

Bowers raced to the win with Dana Hooker earning her second consecutive runner-up placing in as many years.

Stephanie Cain chased down a fast-starting Kara Donnallan to finish third, with Donnellan in fourth and new draftee Philipa Seth rounding out the top five.

The win is a confidence booster for Bowers, who is chasing her AFLW debut after missing the past two seasons due to multiple knee injuries.

Despite proving her aerobic fitness, the 26-year-old still has a way to go this pre-season having to pass a number of football and medical specific targets before being able to train.

“I was pretty impressed with myself after having so long out,” Bowers said.

“I’m happy it’s over now and we can get into the footy stuff.

“This year (I feel) a bit closer (to playing). I’m pretty much there, there’s one box to tick off so I’m hoping to run out in the guernsey this year.”

While Bowers cruised to the win, it was Donnellan setting the pace for the first half of the run.

“I sat behind Kara and regretted it instantly as she did a fast first lap, she always does,” Bowers said.

“That’s her tactic and she did an excellent run today and I wouldn’t want her to change it.”

Bowers said the night was a positive for the team, with many players impressing with their times.

“I’m very happy. We had a target to reach for pretty much everyone and nearly everyone got it,” Bowers said.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of girls now and they’re really happy with their runs. We’re going to finish tonight and be happy to start the season.”

Bowers added she was pleased to see newcomer Seth post a strong finish.

“Philipa’s always been fit and we’re very lucky to have her,” Bowers said.

“(Her running) is one of the highlights of her game. I’m glad she did it to show the coaches that she can perform.”
