Senior coach Ross Lyon is seeing a number of positives from the playing group this pre-season, stating the need for the club to improve to match it with the top teams in the AFL.

Speaking to fremantlefc.com.au during Fremantle’s week-long camp on the Gold Coast, Lyon highlighted a number of encouraging stories from within the playing group.

This included mature age draftee Brett Bewley, who is pushing for an early-season debut as a running midfielder, and small forward Brandon Matera, who has stepped up his fitness this pre-season.

“Brett physically has adapted (to AFL standard),” Lyon said.

“He’s a high-end runner and a really mature athlete.

“Brandon Matera came back in great shape and is making some really good ground and is developing the running profile of a small forward, so that’s pleasing.”

Lyon also highlighted a number of younger players who continue to emerge, including defender Griffin Logue, who missed the 2018 season due to injury.

“There’s been some great continuity in our young players like Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra and Sean Darcy, who just signed a new contract,” Lyon said.

“To see Logue back on the track, he had a year he would like to forget, but he’s physically training really well.

“There are lots of little stories floating around but every club has them and we’ve got to continue to write our own story with great effort.”
