Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs were convincing winners in round 1. While we’ve only got one game to go on in 2013, there are still a number of indictors that highlight what the two teams did well, how they like to play and who were the main contributors.

Here are some of the stats that matter for Freo and the Dogs ahead of round 2.

Forward line

Liam Jones was the main inside 50 target for the Dogs with 13. Freo kicked to Pavlich on 10 occasions.

Daniel Giansiracusa’s 3 goals and 3 goal assists led the AFL for scoreboard impact in round 1. Freo’s Michael Walters wasn’t far behind with 3 goals, 2 behinds and 2 goal assists.

The Bulldogs led the AFL for marks on the lead inside 50 with 11. Robert Murphy had 3 to rank 3rd in the competition.

Giansiracusa also had 9 uncontested marks, which ranked 7th in the AFL but was very impressive considering he played mainly as a forward.

Defence

Brett Goodes, 29 on debut, had 5 marks from opposition kicks. Lee Spurr had 4 for Freo.

The Dogs kicked backwards an AFL leading 16 times against the Lions. They played on after a mark on just 24.1% of the time, which was a lowly 16th in the AFL. Freo was 14th with 25.3%.

Small defender Liam Picken had 10 uncontested marks in the Dogs’ backline, the third most in the AFL.
