Fremantle is dominating hit outs, with its ruck duo of Aaron Sandilands and Zac Clarke leading the AFL in the key statistic so far this season.

It has long been said getting first hands on the football is a key in AFL, and Sandilands and Clarke are giving their midfielders the best chance, notching up a competition high of 203 hit-outs in four games.

Freo’s ruck dominated in the 14-point win over Sydney on Saturday night, winning hit-outs 44 to 26.

Sandilands notched up 32 alone, in a powerful display.

So far this season, Sandilands has recorded 151 hit-outs at an average of just under 38 per game.

On his own, he has won more hit-outs than Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, Geelong and Western Bulldogs.

It will be a tough challenge for Freo’s ruck brigade this Sunday against experienced Melbourne ruckman Mark Jamar.

Match Preview: Fremantle v Melbourne

Jamar is ranked six for hit-outs this year, averaging 32.2 per game.

Hit-outs have become a trademark of Freo, after leading the statistics during last year’s regular season.

Fremantle play Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday 3 May. Bounce down is at 1.10pm.
