Most people take for granted running around the sports field but for Travis Bennett, he cherishes every moment.

Travis was part of a group from Heart Kids WA that came along to Fremantle’s training session last Friday morning.

The 15-year-old is battling a condition called tetralogy of Fallot – a rare combination of four heart defects.

The passionate sportsman has only recently been able to compete on the field.

“I’m getting a lot more active with sport,” he said.

“I play football and soccer at school."

A memory I will cherish forever

Fremantle player Max Duffy, who has been an ambassador for the charity for his whole playing career, spoke with the group.

Duffy has a long association with the charity after his good friend Stephen Rigg died from a sudden heart attack at just 18.

To this day, Duffy honours his mate by wearing the number 24, marking the date his friend died.

“I hope I can raise as much awareness as I can and honour Stephen in a way he would like to be remembered,” Duffy said.

"It was great to see the kids down here, and see the smiles on their faces.

"I hope everyone gets behind HeartKid WA's Cuppa Campaign and raises much needed funds for the foundation."

Travis met Duffy last year and said it was good to catch up with him and watch the team train.

“It was great talking to Max again, it’s been a while,” he said.

“It’s good to see the guys.

“I’m hoping to see them play in a grand final.”

Earlier, senior coach Ross Lyon said Heart Kids WA was a vital organisation.

“There is eight babies born everyday with a heart condition,” he said.

“It is really worthwhile, trying to find solutions for young babies and children with heart conditions.

“Those things help you keep in perspective.”

HeartKids WA is encouraging people to host their own Cuppa for HeartKids event with family, friends, school or workmates throughout the month of September.

Whether it’s an elaborate high tea or a simple coffee date, those interested can register to be involved at www.cuppaforheartkids.org.au.
