Champion Geelong on-baller James Kelly says the Cats' midfield group has spent plenty of time studying Aaron Sandilands' ruck patterns.

Freo's ruckman has been in excellent form since returning from a toe injury in round 21 against Richmond.

"He's (Sandilands) got a fair few hit zones and he can hit the ball anywhere. He is obviously a brilliant player and a fantastic ruckman so, especially the midfield group, we'll be looking a lot at that, and not only him but also the players underneath him," Kelly said on geelongcats.com.au

Kelly said 21-year-old ruckman Nathan Vardy, who played his first game of the season last Saturday against the Sydney Swans, would be important.

"We weren't sure how he was going to go. During the week we just said 'just go out there and play and play your role', but he played really well and we were really happy with him," Kelly said.

If selected, Vardy will take on Sandilands for the first time in Saturday night's Elimination Final at the MCG.
