Matt de Boer says Fremantle’s losing record at Simonds Stadium is irrelevant leading into Saturday’s final against Geelong.

The club has only tasted success once in 13 visits to the ground, with the only victory coming in 2005.

The Cats comfortably beat Freo there in round 14 this season.

De Boer said the club’s strength under Ross Lyon has been an intense focus on the next moment.

“We haven’t dwelled on the past at all, Ross has been big on that since he got here, the past counts for nothing,” he said.

“We’ll be focussing on the next moment. We’ve got a training session on Tuesday and Thursday and then it will be the game against Geelong.

“We’re really excited and can’t wait.”

Fremantle had expected to play an away final in Melbourne at the MCG or Etihad Stadium, but the AFL decided to hand Geelong its first final in more than 100 years at Simonds Stadium.

De Boer said the players were happy to play anywhere, but he hoped the Freo supporters were still able to provide a purple presence on Saturday.

“Hopefully, a few of our fans can infiltrate the stadium,” he said.

“We’ll go down there with our best team possible and deliver on a great effort and execute our role and, hopefully, get the job done.”
