Michael Walters has played down his final term move to the midfield in Saturday night’s 27-point win over Collingwood, saying it was just momentary.

The skilful forward was thrown onto the ball at the start of the final term as senior coach Ross Lyon looked to re-ignite his seemingly struggling side.

‘Son Son’ kicked two great goals and had seven disposals to help Freo stave off the Magpies’ challenge.

But he says he did that where he started the game at, up forward.

“I was only there for the start (of the quarter),” Walters said on his centre-square adventure.

“‘Barra’ (David Mundy) was getting tagged heavily so we thought we’d change it up.

“As soon as the ball went up I went forward and ‘Barra’ was back in the middle.”

One of Walters’ final term goals was a dagger into Collingwood’s hopes.

‘Son Son’ marked on the 50m arc and played on immediately, blasting through a major on the run.

“I played on straight away because I was a fair way out,” he said.

“50m is a big distance for me. I only have short legs.”

Freo faces another huge challenge next week when it travels to Sydney to face the defending premiers at the SCG.

“It doesn’t get much tougher,” Walters said.

“But we feel we played ok tonight. We have a lot of areas toimprove on, and as soon as we get those sorted out, we’ll try and improve next week.”
