Tom Sheridan says the carrot of holding a spot in the team is driving Fremantle’s youngsters ahead of the club’s 2013 finals campaign.

The 19-year-old, who signed a two-year contract extension recently, came on in the second quarter of Saturday night’s win over Port Adelaide at Patersons Stadium and kicked two goals.

That was Sheridan’s fourth game in a row and eighth in Freo’s past nine.

A number of the club’s selections from the 2011 National Draft have performed well at the business end of the season.

Lachie Neale has been excellent over the past month, and Cam Sutcliffe continues to win the football in a variety of roles.

“We were all in the same draft, and we’re really close mates, so it’s great for all of us to be getting an opportunity and doing all we can to take it,” Sheridan said.

“Lachie is a ball-magnet and Cam does his role, he gets the ball and is an elite runner.

“There are a few out of the side, too, like Hayden Crozier.”

A number of senior players will hope to resume this week ahead of the first final in a fortnight, including Clancee Pearce and Garrick Ibbotson.

While aware of the quality of those still to return, Sheridan said all the young players could do was continue to perform and make life tough for the club’s selectors.

“Hopefully we can all hold our spots because it’s a pretty strong team,” he said.

The game against the Power saw Sheridan enter the game as the sub earlier than anticipated for the second week running.

While not the way he wanted to get more time on the field, Sheridan admitted the extra exposure had been invaluable.

“It’s good to get on early and get more experience out there with the boys,” he said.

“I think I’m growing every week in different areas.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to keep playing with the boys, it’s a great culture down here.”
