Fremantle general manager of football Chris Bond says the NAB Cup presents a great opportunity for the players to get match minutes into their legs ahead of round 1.

Freo selected a 31-man squad to face West Coast and Geelong this Saturday at Patersons Stadium in the first round of NAB Cup action.

Senior players Matthew Pavlich, David Mundy and Ryan Crowley were among those not named, along with star midfielder Nat Fyfe.

But Bond said Freo would look to introduce more experienced players into the team as the NAB Cup progressed.

“It’s really important from our end that they play football to get ready for round 1,” he said.

“Throughout the NAB Cup, if players are fit to play, they’ll play.”

With Perth forecasted to be above 30 degrees on Saturday, Bond predicted there would be high interchange rotations.

“We’ve got six players on the bench that we’ll be able to rotate,” he said

“There’s no restriction on rotations, even though there will be further on in the NAB Cup.

“We’ve got a lot of faith in the people that look after that area.”

Bond said it had been a long, hard pre-season, and that the players couldn’t wait to get out and finally play some competitive footy.

“We’ve been really pleased with the effort the guys have put in,” he said.

“Now they get a chance against two incredibly talented footy teams.

“We’re very much looking forward to it.”
