Being drafted onto an AFL rookie list was a bonus for Michael Barlow.

So was his debut in round 1, 2010, and his 13th game, as forgettable as it may have been.

Last Friday night’s game against Essendon was a bonus, too, as was Tuesday’s training session on Fremantle Oval.

Barlow has never expected too much. His upbringing hastaught him to be thankful for what he has.

“I’m reminded not to take too much for granted and just enjoy the challenge of being able to play AFL footy and cherish every moment I spend at the Fremantle Football Club,” he said.

Barlow plays his 50th AFL game this Saturday against Hawthorn at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium.

While most 50-game milestones don’t get too much fanfare, Barlow’s journey probably entitles him to a little bit more attention this week.

But not if you ask him, he was proud to play one and humbled to reach 50.

“I doubted getting to one when I was playing local footy and missing out on drafts,” Barlow said.

“Once I got into the system, I just knew I’d leave no stone unturned to give myself the best opportunity to play AFL football and debut.

“Any game I’ve played since making my debut, I see as a bonus.”

But don’t think Barlow will rest on his laurels, satisfied with what he’s accomplished so far.

“I want to have a long and successful career and repay the Fremantle Football Club for the faith they’ve shown in me,” he said.

“I want to push forward and play as many games as I can at AFL level because I love doing it and I love playing in front of fantastic fans every weekend.”
