Michael Walters couldn’t even get a word out. He just shook his head, lips parted as if ready to speak, but nothing came out.

He had just been asked after Fremantle’s preliminary final how he felt about playing in an AFL Grand Final.

Eventually, something came out.

“It’s just surreal,” Walters said, still gazing blankly, somewhere towards the change room floor.

The rooms were incredibly loud, filled with the players’ family and friends, but they may as well have been empty for Walters.

He was oblivious to it all.

The man they call ‘Son Son’ had every reason to ponder what lies ahead.

Two years ago, just getting back into the AFL took everything he had.

A grand final? Walters finally composed himself enough to speak.

“I never even thought about it,” he said.

“We played finals last year, but Adelaide knocked us off in the second half.

“We’ve all given everything just to get back here again, and now this.

“We’re there.

Then, he took a moment to think, and the Ross Lyon in him came out.

“We're there, but we’re not,” he added.

“We've still got another game to play.”

Walters was then asked what he was willing to give to help Fremantle get over the line at the MCG on Saturday.

“Everything,” he said.

“We’re willing to give it everything we've got.

“We've put in the hard yards, now there’s one more game to go.

“We’ll go out there and put our heart and soul on the line.”

And as for the thousands of fans who will travel east to support the club in its quest for greatness?

Walters said their presence would be unbelievable, and he had a message for them.
“Just hang in there and keep supporting us,” he said.

“We will be out there doing our very best and we'll try not to let you down.”
