Tendai Mzungu says Fremantle must pick up its form ahead of Sunday’s Carlton Mid Derby following a scratchy fortnight.

The club had a hefty defeat at the hands of top-two side Geelong two weeks ago before being outplayed in an error-riddled first half against a young St Kilda team on Sunday.

“The last fortnight hasn’t been the way we want to play,” Mzungu said.

The hard-running midfielder labelled Freo’s performance in the weekend’s win over the Saints as ‘rusty’, particularly the first half.

“We were way off where we wanted to be,” he said.

“Even in transition to find the man, we were really poor.

“That’s something we addressed at half-time and, in the second half, I think you saw that we started to play more of our brand.”

Mzungu said the team would need to continue that effort against a desperate West Coast team.

The Eagles are coming off a heart-stopping come-from-behind win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium that kept them in touch with the top 8.
“We know they’re going to come out and give absolutely everything,” Mzungu said.

“We’ll match that and look forward to the challenge.”

The 27-year-old Mzungu had 29 possessions and a goal in the 30-point win over St Kilda.

He said it was a big boost to the midfield to regain major ball-winners David Mundy and Michael Barlow.

“You feed off them,” he said.

“They go and win the ball, and playing on the outside, they give you every opportunity to get the ball.

“It was great to have Dave and Mick back this week.”

Mundy and Barlow shared the Ross Glendinning Medal for best afield in the round 1 Carlton Mid Derby, which Fremantle won by 28 points.
