Fremantle has added two talls and a midfielder at Thursday night’s NAB AFL National Draft on the Gold Coast.

Fremantle general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said the club was extremely pleased with the result.

"There was a real list management focus, we wanted to use the first two picks to get some talls in," he said.

The club’s first selection (pick 17) was 200cm key forward/ruckman Michael Apeness, who had a breakout year in 2013 after coming back to AFL from two years playing rugby union.

“We wanted to really bolster the tall department,” Lloyd said.

“To get Michael in as a real strong, power forward was really exciting for the football club.

“He’s someone that we can really develop. He would have been the biggest contested mark in the TAC Cup program, if not the country this year.”

The club chose two Tasmanians with its other two selections – key forward/defender Alex Pearce (pick 37) and midfielder/forward Brady Grey (pick 58).

“Alex is a really athletic tall so he can play forward or back and he’s really strong overhead,” Lloyd said.

“He can really cover the ground well for his size and he’s a terrific competitor and he really wants to learn and work.

“Brady is a mid/forward who is nice and athletic and has a good blend of repeat speed.

“He’s really strong below his knees he’s good at ground level taking the ball below his knees and goal.

“He will add some spark to that mid/forward position.”
