Ross Lyon says Freo are disappointed to come away from the SCG with two points, after his side rallied to draw against Sydney on Saturday night.

The senior coach was no stranger to tied contests, having coached St Kilda to an epic drawn Grand Final in 2010 against Collingwood.

The Saints lost the replay the following week.

“I’ve done draws before and I don’t like them,” Lyon told Fox Footy after the game against the Swans.

“We came here to win the game. We let ourselves down badly after a good start.

“We’re a professional football club, we aim to win four points.”

Freo had the chance to win the game when Michael Johnson’s set-shot with the scores tied and just seconds left was marked on the goal line by Sydney’s Sam Reid.

“Punch the ball through, it’s not a hard one,” he said.

But overall, Lyon was pleased with his side’s efforts to come back from 27 points down in the last quarter.

“We showed good character but we’ve got some lessons to learn,” he said.

The senior coach said Freo had been solid in tight finishes this season.

“We could have pinched Essendon, we got Richmond and we could have got tonight,” he said.

Lyon said small forward Michael Walters had tweaked an ankle in the third quarter, but he wasn’t sure what the extent of the damage was yet.

He said Freo now entered an important period before the mid-season break.

“We’ve got to set ourselves to the bye, so we’re going to be fierce over the next two rounds.”
