Fremantle captain David Mundy says the team doesn’t want to waste the final games of the season as the focus shifts to next year.

Fremantle’s effort against Geelong on Friday night was notably better than the showing against Melbourne a week earlier, and Mundy said the team wanted to keep improving.

“We’ve spoken about really getting something out of these last seven weeks, clearly we are mathematically out of the finals and our goal for the year has been dashed,” he said after Friday’s game.

“We really see these last seven weeks as counting for something, we’re trying to build something, sustain success here and it starts with extraordinary effort.”

Fremantle started the game with high intensity, and led the Cats by 16 points at quarter time, before Geelong kicked seven goals to three between the first and third breaks.

A spirited final quarter saw Fremantle pin the Cats in their defensive 50, but the team was unable to convert on the scoreboard.

Mundy said the team started well, but fell away in the middle half of the match.

“I think we played a really good first quarter and last quarter, and in the second and third we really fell away with our effort and organisation around the ball and in all lines of the team,” he said.

“That was really disappointing, but we’ll look to build on that good half of football.”

Fremantle face Gold Coast in Queensland on Saturday, and Mundy said the team would have a look at aspects to improve on.

“We’ll have a really thorough review of the game and pick out some learnings, and really progress our game to potentially play three really good quarters next week,” he said.
