North Melbourne captain Andrew Swallow signalled earlier in the week the key to his side’s chances of winning Sunday’s game against Fremantle.

Swallow said it was imperative for the Roos to win the ball inside and then spread, where the likes of Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey and Shaun Atley are at their most damaging.

North will bank on the clearances indicator, in which it ranks second in the league this year with 41 per game.

Freo are ninth in the league with 38 per game.

North are also prominent in centre square clearances, where it is fourth in the AFL with 14.5 per game.

Fremantle comes last in this indicator with just 10.6 per game, but as the side has done for most of the season, its all-ground pressure is inflicting substantial damage on opposition teams.

League-leading Hawthorn proved with its victory over West Coast on Friday night that clearance domination doesn’t always equate to success.

Ross Lyon’s side will also be mindful of the Kangaroos’ late fade-outs this year.

North has blown late leads on multiple occasions, so if Freo were to fall behind at any stage, every player would be mindful to keep grinding away and hope the tables turn.

It will be wet today, too, and North’s last game in tough conditions saw it lose to third-year side Gold Coast. Fremantle played in the rain against Adelaide before the bye and was solid in a close win.
