Australian Football has long been regarded as a great way to bring different people and cultures together.

International Curtin University students experienced this first hand thanks to the ‘Welcome to the AFL’ program delivered by the Fremantle Dockers.

More than 190 international students were invited to a clinic held last month at Curtin University. Freo’s first year players, along with multicultural ambassador Tendai Mzungu, facilitated the clinic.

Mzungu said the afternoon of footy helped students forge stronger friendships.

“As a multicultural ambassador I am trying to spread the game as much as I can and it’s great to take steps like we are today at Curtin Uni,” he said.

“Many students who were involved had never kicked a footy before.

“It would be great to see some of these guys playing Aussie Rules one day.”

In 2016, multicultural players make up 15 per cent of the AFL player lists across the 18 AFL Clubs

The AFL’s Multicultural Round this weekend against Melbourne will see a range of initiatives implemented, including an AFL live broadcast of the game in Spanish.
