Cooper Simpson has signed a two-year contract extension that will see the 19-year-old stay at the Club until the end of 2027.

Selected by Fremantle with pick 35 in the 2023 National Draft, Simpson made his debut as the substitute in the Club’s 24-point win over the Western Bulldogs in round seven.

The dynamic small forward/midfielder became an instant crowd favourite showing off his dazzling speed and agility to break away from the contest, while staying composed to lower the eyes and find teammates on the lead.

Simpson who was previously contracted until the end of 2025 said his opening two games to his AFL career have been filled with ‘surreal’ moments.

“(The debut) was a surreal moment, it was unreal to go out there in front of the fans and get the win.” Simpson said.

“It was really special for my family to make the trip over, they have been to every game so far so it wasn’t a surprise, but it was good to have them be part of the moment.

“I’m enjoying my time here and want to spend my time here and it’s great to have the Club reciprocate that, so I'm really happy.”

Presented with jumper no.29 by Club legend Matthew Pavlich an hour before his debut, Simpson said he was filled with gratitude to pull on such a significant jumper.

“To have one of the greats of the Club and the game present the jumper obviously means a lot to the Freo fans and the Freo culture, so to wear it is really special and something I am really grateful for.” Simpson said.

“Bailey Banfield and Sam Switkowski have been good for me, they have great knowledge and have shown me plenty of tips and tricks around the Club.”

Ahead of Fremantle’s Purple Hands Game this Friday night, Simpson has also put up his hand to do some work with the Purple Hands Foundation throughout the year, particularly with the Foundation’s Goals aHead program.

Fremantle Head of Player Personnel David Walls said Simpson had been super impressive since arriving at the Club.

“From day one, Cooper has taken on every challenge and has been keen to adapt to any roles asked of him,” Walls said.

“It only took seven rounds for him to force his way into the AFL line-up and we saw his quick feet, great evasiveness and a bit of class.

“He’s super flexible. A small forward who gets up the ground and knows where the goals are. We see him going to a wing or into the midfield in the longer term."

“His mum and dad, Jodie and Jason, are just as invested in the Fremantle Football Club and it was great to see them travel to Perth for his AFL debut and watch his first AFL game on the MCG on Sunday.

Simpson becomes another Fremantle player committed to the Club until 2026 or beyond, taking the tally to 18.

Simpson is now the youngest player to be signed with the Fremantle beyond 2026, just edging out fellow 19-year-old Hugh Davies.
