Fremantle doesn't have a return date for Harley Bennell's comeback from a calf injury, with the high-profile recruit already ruled out of the Starlight Purple Haze game in round two against the Gold Coast.

Bennell missed the Freo Dockers' opening round 65-point loss to the Western Bulldogs after straining his troublesome calf while playing for Peel Thunder on March 19.

The setback continued a history of calf issues for the 23-year-old, who suffered ongoing problems during his five seasons at the Suns and undertook a carefully managed 10-week strengthening program before his latest injury.

Speaking to Perth radio station 6PR, Fremantle general manager of football operations Chris Bond said there was no set time frame for Bennell's return.

What is Starlight Purple Haze?

"He's still going to be a while. We haven't got a firm (timeframe) what it will be with his calf at the moment," Bond said.

"But no, he won't be available this week."

In better news for Freo, Bond confirmed defender Michael Johnson should be available if he gets through training this week following calf soreness.

Freo will also welcome back ruckman Aaron Sandilands (suspension), while Bond reiterated superstar Nat Fyfe wasn't carrying an injury.

The Brownlow medallist suffered a corked leg in the loss to the Dogs and gathered only 15 possessions for the match – his lowest tally since round 11, 2014.

"He got a knock on the leg, but he went into the game 100 per cent and at the end of the day he'd be the first one to say there would be no excuses physically for him either," Bond said.

"He was one of our players that was down as well, but we know the character of the man as well and we've got a lot of character in our team, so we'd be expecting a big week this week."
