Ross Lyon passed on some of his coaching knowledge to the community, taking South Fremantle’s Under 16 development squad for a training session at Fremantle Oval on Monday afternoon.

The session was part of the AFL Australia Post Community Camp and was a great initiative for the kids, according to Tom Atkinson, District Operations Manager of the WAFC.

Country visits invaluable

“It’s really beneficial for the kids here today to be taught and have lessons reinforced to them by a senior coaching figure like Ross Lyon,” Atkinson said.

“A lot of it was about the basics being the key.

“It really reminded the kids not to focus on the fancy stuff and just execute on a repeated basis.

“It gave the kids an idea of what it will take to keep playing footy at the higher levels.”

The knowledge obtained from Lyon didn’t just resonate with those playing, but also the coaches in attendance.

Graeme Fitzgerald, a coach with the Booragoon Bulldogs, said the lessons he took away from the day would be invaluable for his team.

“I was really interested in Ross’ ideas and philosophies,” Fitzgerald said.

“To be able to see some of his drills in action, and be able to take that back to the club and use them with my boys is really important.

“It helps lift all the coaches’ standards, and if we can teach that in grass roots footy, there’s no doubt it will improve everyone involved.”
