Chris Mayne says he’s fit and eager to get some minutes into his legs after a compromised pre-season post the Christmas break.

The star forward sustained a back injury around the holiday season that has kept him in rehab until recently.

But Mayne said he was back into full training and couldn’t wait to pull on the boots against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium today.

“I was able to work hard in rehab with running and weights and that’s allowed me to return in good shape,” he said.

“I’m not aiming to play amazingly, it’s more about getting some run, getting a bit of my touch and playing the role that’s expected of me.”

Tonight’s match could also be the first time Mayne, Matthew Pavlich and recruit Scott Gumbleton line up together in Fremantle’s forward line.

Mayne said he welcomed Gumbleton’s presence in the attacking 50, which he believed would only add to the already strong chemistry between the club’s forwards.

“’Gumby’ is going to be a massive asset to us, being another tall target and presence,” he said.

“I feel it’s going to work well for us, he will give more avenues for the midfielders and defenders to kick to and more spread and space for the forwards.

“We’ve just got to work with him to make sure he understands the game plan and what we expect of him when he plays.”
