Michael Johnson will be wearing his Indigenous jumper with pride when he runs out to play the Western Bulldogs during the AFL’s Indigenous Round.

Johnson unveiled the club’s 2014 Indigenous jumper on Monday afternoon, which is the clash version of last year’s home jumper and this year features the Stolen Generation Commemorative Flower above the three boomerangs.

The key defender has a personal connection to the jumper, his stepfather Joseph Quatermaine was part of the Stolen Generation.

“It has affected his family,” Johnson said.

“It makes you think about how it was back in the day and how they were taken from their families.

“When we play the Bulldogs, hopefully we can go out there and perform and hopefully he can get something out of it.

“Not just my family and my stepdad, but other families will see this and see that we are honouring the Stolen Generation.”

Johnson said he was really happy with the design and the playing group was looking forward to the round 11 clash against the Dogs.

“I’m sure the Indigenous boys and the players that are on the list at the moment will be proud to show it off,” he said.

Johnson is now seen as a leader amongst the eight Indigenous players at the club and commented that it was the likes of Roger Hayden and Antoni Grover who helped him fit in when he was a junior.

“What made me fit into the club really quick was having those Indigenous boys here," he said.

“They were fantastic players, those guys have done a lot of work around the club and put it on the map.

“It’s great to have eight Indigenous boys here, they are part of the brothers down at the club.

“Now that I’m the older one, hopefully they look up to me and get some advice from me.

“When they need me, I’m here and I’m sure when they get older they will do the same for the young guys coming through.”
