Fremantle’s sole International Rules representative Nat Fyfe believes the upcoming series against Ireland will be a great opportunity to learn from other stars of the game.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed tremendous individual honours in 2014, with the AFL Players’ Association Most Valuable Player award adding to his maiden All Australian selection.

Fyfe will line up against the Irish at Patersons Stadium on Saturday 22 November in an Australian team that was selected on the basis that all players were either All Australian in 2014 or a previous All Australian in their career.

“When the idea was brought up this year about getting the best talent to play, it came to the forefront of my mind that I wanted to be involved,” he said.

Besides an opportunity to see how his skills crossed over into a different sport, Fyfe said the game would give him invaluable experience playing alongside the AFL’s elite.

“Some of the preparation techniques that other players use… what do they do differently that I don’t that I could potentially incorporate into my game?,” he said.

“It’ll be good to watch and learn.”

The Australian team will be coached by three-time Hawthorn premiership coach Alastair Clarkson, who will be assisted by Fyfe’s current coach Ross Lyon and Geelong’s Chris Scott.

“They are really high-calibre quality coaches there,” Fyfe said.

“Ross has been really excited about the series and has been getting us excited about it.

“Hopefully I can pick up some tips and hopefully Ross can pick up tips off those coaches as well.”

Fyfe expected Perth to get behind the match, but he added the visitors wouldn’t be getting too much love.

“I think Perth as a city is pretty welcoming but on the night itself it might be pretty hostile, I think,” he said.

“Perth’s been great at getting behind all sports and in particular the International Rules Series.

“There’s certainly some excitement about it.”
