Another member of the legendary Doig family has been recognised by the NAB West Australian Football Hall of Fame, with Charles Doig Senior inducted at Domain Stadium on Sunday as recognition to his contribution to the game in WA.

Charles Snr, who joins son George in the hall of fame, played 216 games for East Fremantle between 1903 and 1921 and featured in eight premierships.

After his retirement from the game, Charles Snr soon took on the role of president at East Fremantle between 1924 and 1936, overseeing another six WAFL premiership wins.

The 1933 premiership as president came while son George was playing with East Fremantle, with George representing EFFC from 1933 to 1945, winning three premierships.

The Doig family is synonymous with football in Fremantle, with a number of family members representing either East Fremantle or South Fremantle since the beginning of last century.

In 2000, the Fremantle Football Club renamed its best and fairest award the Doig Medal in honour of the family.

John Doig, the grandson of Charles Snr, said his talented grandfather contributed just as much to East Fremantle off the field as he did on the field.

“His persistence and helping of East Fremantle Football Club was brilliant,” John said.

“He played for them, he was an administrator, a president and he also played the piano for their post-game parties and evenings and so on.

“He was a Jack of all trades and did an awful lot in that field, he was such an influence on the East Fremantle Football Club.”
