Fremantle AFLW defender Tayla Bresland was proud of the efforts from Freos backline in their four-point win in round one over Melbourne at Casey Fields on Sunday.

Bresland knew it was going to take something special to steal a win after Melbourne’s third-quarter surge, where they kicked five unanswered goals and kept Freo scoreless.

“Every time they got a goal we just reset as a group and didn’t drop our heads,” she said.

“I was really proud of the girls, down the backline to be copping a fair bit.

“It didn’t help with the wind but we stuck in there and we hung on. We knew in the fourth quarter we had to pull something out, which the girls did.”

To be a part of the club’s first away win was a memorable moment for the inaugural player, after she sat out the majority of the 2018 season with a knee injury.

“Last year was a bit devastating watching it from the sidelines, I only played the last two games, so to be back out there in round one this year felt pretty good,” she said.

Bresland collected 12 disposals and three tackles from full back and was solid in defence.

Fremantle will now prepare for their first home game of the season as they take on the Brisbane Lions on Sunday 10 February at 3:05pm WST at Fremantle Oval.
