Nat Fyfe has revealed how Ross Lyon’s contract extension with Fremantle was a major catalyst in his decision to sign with the club for a further three years.

Freo’s senior coach extended his tenure in March this year to remain at the club until at least the end of the 2017 season.

Fyfe put pen to paper in June and will also be a Fremantle Docker at least until the end of 2017.

The 22-year-old midfield star told the audience at a Woodside function on Wednesday that signing was an easy decision, especially after Lyon had committed.

“Once Ross signed and showed his loyalty to the club until 2017, it became a no-brainer for me,” Fyfe said.

“I love playing for Ross. He just brings such high accountability and a really clear game plan.

“Everyone knows exactly what they have to do.

“I was always really happy to be at Fremantle, but when Ross signed, that made it really clear in my mind.”

Fyfe has enjoyed a tremendous 2014 season, but he said 2013 was probably a better year for him personally.

“Last year was probably my best year as a full year,” he said.

The Lake Grace product said his goal in 2014 was to continue improving, particularly his kicking skills, and add versatility to his game.

“Just have that versatility about my game where I could go forward and take marks and kick some goals, and potentially roll back and help the defence as well,” Fyfe said.

“My goal kicking has improved, I’ve kicked 19.7 for the year, so I’m pretty happy with that so far.

“My field kicking has improved as well and that’s something that I’ll continue to focus on for the remainder of my career.”
