Nick Suban has expressed his gratitude to the Fremantle Dockers, saying the club ‘meant everything’ to him now.

The 24-year-old has been among the most consistent performers this season, including a purple-patch of form over the past month.

He will play his 100th game for Freo in Saturday’s clash with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Originally from Victoria, Suban was asked at his Tuesday media conference what Fremantle now meant to him.

“It means everything,” he said.

“I got drafted when I was 18 and came over from Victoria. I left school to come here.

“It means everything, it’s made me the person that I am today, so I owe a lot to this club and it means a lot to me.”

The tough midfielder also praised senior coach Ross Lyon, who he said has had a “massive influence” on his career.

“He’s taught me a hell of a lot since he’s been here,” Suban said.

“He taught me standards and how to train hard and get the most out of your body.

“I’m thankful.”

One of those lessons came after a game in Launceston against Hawthorn last year when Suban was subbed out before half-time.

Asked how he felt at the time, he said it was something he and every player knew they had to deal with.

“You play good games, you play bad games, you can’t play well all the time,” he said.

“I didn’t perform on that day, but I just wanted to move forward and train well and try and prove myself as a player.”

Suban was taken with the 24th pick in the 2008 AFL Draft and played every game in his debut season.

He said he was more than happy to be taken by Fremantle.

“I wasn’t sure where I was going to go, I hadn’t had any indications from any club, but I was willing to go anywhere and I was really grateful for the opportunity to come to Perth and to Fremantle and play AFL footy,” he said.

Suban will share his milestone game with Paul Duffield, who plays his 150th match and becomes eligible for life membership at Freo.

“It’s great to see Paul play 150, he’s been a massive part of our side for a long period of time,” he said.

“I wish him well and I’m really excited that I get to run out with him on Saturday, hopefully.”

Suban described Duffield as a leader at Fremantle, and agreed the defender was probably underrated in that regard outside of the club.

“The leadership he has on the ground from half-back, he’s great for our side,” he said.

“He doesn’t say a hell of a lot off the field, he’s a pretty quiet guy.

“But he’s very important to how we structure up and how we go about it on game day.”
