Endurance gun Tendai Mzungu has run the fastest time in Wednesday morning’s 3km time trial.

But the 28-year-old was pushed all the way by teammates, including Matt de Boer, who went stride for stride until Mzungu broke away in the final lap.

The times were impressive across the board. Stephen Hill turned out in great shape, while Tom Sheridan and Irish recruit Sean Hurley again impressed.

Mzungu and de Boer have been training together during the off-season.

“He’s a great training partner,” Mzungu said.

“We push each other along. It’s great for him to run a personal best and be there at the end.”

Draftee Josh Deluca also displayed his endurance abilities with a solid run.

After the trial, Mzungu said the run wasn’t easy, but he was pleased with his and his teammates’ efforts.

“We’re all happy with how we went, but it’s a tough little track,” he said.

There was great spirit among the players at the finish line, which Mzungu said was very positive.

“The first few seconds is trying to catch your breath and look after yourself a bit, but then there’s that real team atmosphere,” he said.

“You like to see how your mates went and see if everyone improved.

“It’s a great environment and it was great to see so many guys do really well today.”

After the race, draftee Connor Blakely went straight to the best runner in the team for advice.

“We spoke about how he was finding his first week and he was asking a few questions,” Mzungu said.

“He’s keen to learn, which is really great.

“He’s eager to be on the right path and really perform at this level.”
