Fremantle forward Chris Mayne says the Fremantle Dockers should be worried about their spots following a dismal display against the Western Bulldogs in round one.

Freo was mauled by the Bulldogs on Easter Sunday and kicked just five goals in fine conditions in the 65-point loss.

Mayne said on Tuesday that all players would feel on notice.

"I think it would be disappointing not to worry about your spot," Mayne said on ahead of the club's home clash with Gold Coast.

"You have to always know that we have a very strong list that is pushing to play senior football."

The Freo Dockers are certain to make at least two changes to the team that will face the Suns.

Must-see midfield battle

Ruckman Aaron Sandilands has served his one-week suspension while veteran defender Michael Johnson should return after missing last week with calf soreness.

Mayne said the pair would be important inclusions on Saturday night but he stressed their absence did not excuse the performance against the Bulldogs.

"They're quality players in their own right," Mayne said.

"To get any player that has played that amount of games for the club and has that much experience is always going to be good for us.

"We still felt we had a lot of confidence in the group we took over. The boys were prepared and had done the work in the pre-season but weren't able to produce on the weekend."

Young key position players Tanner Smith and Alex Pearce kicked six goals between them in Peel Thunder's win in the WAFL last weekend and could come into consideration.

Mayne said the Freo Dockers had taken notice of Pearce's performance in particular.

Youngster Ed Langdon gathered 32 touches for Peel while veteran Matt de Boer collected 34 disposals to press his case.

The Freo Dockers were beaten thoroughly in all areas last Sunday but the lack of improvement in their ball use was glaring given the work they had done over the summer.

However, Mayne preached patience.

"What we've worked on over the pre-season, we have to stick to that," Mayne said.

"(We'll keep) working on all of our ball movement, being able to deliver the ball more to the forwards and give ourselves the best opportunity to keep kicking goals and finish off the hard work that the mids and defenders do."

Star recruit Harley Bennell won't play against his old side and no timeframe has been placed on his return from a calf injury.
