Selby Lee-Steere may well be one of Freo’s smartest and most generous fans.

He recently donated $42,427 to Fremantle’s annual Starlight Purple Haze game, played in round three against St Kilda, helping the club reach a fundraising record of $205,804.

Lee-Steere is famous in the AFL Fantasy ranks, with his team Moreira’s Magic winning the competition in 2017 and 2018.

At the encouragement of good friend and former Freo player Matt de Boer, Lee-Steere started developing season guides for fellow fantasy players in exchange for donations to Starlight.

Lee-Steere has lived in Sydney for the past six years and got to know de Boer when de Boer started working at the same finance company.

“Matt gave me the idea to do up a fantasy guide for the 2018 season,” Lee-Steere said.

“As I’d already won a car and Grand Final tickets, I didn’t want to make a profit out of it but I also didn’t want to waste the opportunity to do something. After talking to Matt, I decided to do it for Starlight, where anyone who donated $30 would get a copy.

“I raised $6,500 in the first year, which is the equivalent of one Starlight wish. Through luck and good fortune I won the comp again in 2018 and won another car. From there, more and more people have been asking for tips.

“This year I put together a bigger guide, a 200 page document going through every player in the comp with stats and comments on every player.

“It took most of the Christmas break to put it together and it just took off.”

Lee-Steere said de Boer encouraged him to get involved with the Starlight Purple Haze game in 2019.

“Growing up as a Freo supporter, you would always be looking forward to the Purple Haze game, so I reached out to the club to donate,” Lee-Steere said.

“I flew over for the game and I felt like a Starlight kid myself getting my wish granted. I had a great day. I was on the oval at half time for the cheque presentation and I met big Sandi who was one of my heroes as a kid.

“After the game, seeing Freo sing the song with the Starlight kids in the middle, you saw it all come together.

“You could see the impact of Starlight and also what the Freo Dockers give to these kids, so that was well worth the trip. We had an absolute ball.”
