In the lead up to our Mother's Day match this Sunday against Port Adelaide, fremantlefc.com.au is profiling a selection of players and their mums.
Today we feature Captain Matthew Pavlich and his mum Jan:
When did you first realise Matthew was going to be a star?
I never had any expectation on him other than for him to do his best and have fun whenever or wherever he played. But I must admit he has always been my star.
What’s the hardest thing about watching him play footy?
I constantly worry about him and am a complete nervous wreck every game he plays. Always have been and always will be.
What’s the nicest thing Matthew has done for you?
There are so many but he rings after each game to tell me he is OK, he includes me in his life and has given me the chance to do things I would never have chosen to do. I'm a very lucky mum.
What do you think is Matthew's greatest quality (non-sporting)?
His loyalty and respect for people and the things he believes in.
Can you tell us any hidden talents he has?
He is a very good cook, a very good organiser and can be extremely persuasive.
Matthew’s thoughts on his mum:
What is the best thing about your mum?
It’s the things you take for granted. Simple things like her general love, support and loyalty.
One thing your mum taught you growing up that has stuck?
Being in a routine, being punctual and making sure you’re on schedule and stick to tasks.
If your talent is footy - whats your mum's talent?
There are three: Cooking, she’s a registered nurse and, she won’t like this one because it sounds a bit chauvinistic, but she’s bloody good at ironing.
When you go to mums for dinner - what do you always hope she has cooked for you?
A lamb roast or a meatloaf roast.
What is the best present you've ever bought your mum?
I recently gave both mum and dad a trip to Europe.
