Emerging Fremantle midfielder Matthew Johnson is set to make his debut for Peel Thunder, named as one of 13 Fremantle-listed players to run out for the Thunder against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

The former Subiaco Lion has three WAFL appearances to his name from his draft year before he was selected at no.21 by Fremantle in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft.

Johnson impressed early in the pre-season before he was struck down with a foot injury, returning to full training earlier this month.

The 13 Freo-listed players are the most this season in a sign of the depth and fitness of Fremantle’s list. Eric Benning will also be in action in the reserves to make it 14 Fremantle-listed players in action for the day.

Executive General Manager of Football Peter Bell said Johnson was due to return to football last week but missed out on the opportunity due to Peel’s bye.

“It’s really exciting, he (Johnson) would have been available for last weekend’s fixture, but with a WAFL bye that wasn’t to be the case,” Bell said.

“I think it will give everyone a bit of a boost to see ‘Johnno’ out there for his first game on the weekend.
