The Fremantle Football Club has released a sustainability framework titled ‘Anchoring a Sustainable Future’ to highlight the work done to date, and the ongoing commitment by the Club to improving its sustainability practices.

The framework was established following the development of the Club’s 2021-2025 Strategic Plan, with one of the key initiatives being to better understand the Club’s contribution to sustainability across its history and consider what the contribution could look like into the future.

Since inception, Fremantle has been a values-driven organisation, underpinned by a strong and positive culture. There is a proud history of being more than just a football Club with demonstrated advocacy in areas and causes the Club believes in.

‘Anchoring a Sustainable Future’ ensures the Club continues to celebrate the programs it engages in across a range of areas, while also identifying aspirations and new areas of focus specifically related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals.

The framework also provides a sustainability agenda that has been developed through the identification of six of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The six goals that Fremantle will focus its sustainability framework around are:

  1. Good Health & Wellbeing
  2. Quality Education
  3. Gender Equality
  4. Reduced Inequalities
  5. Responsible Consumption
  6. Production and Climate Action.

Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said the framework was an important project for the Club to undertake.

“Following broad consultation, we identified that aligning with the United Nations SDGs would be the best approach to help develop our sustainability framework,” Garlick said.

“Importantly we have also reflected and taken a look back at our Club’s journey to date with the delivery of sustainability initiatives in collaboration with proud key partners since 1995.

“Some incredibly impactful work has been carried out over a long period of time, and we know there is more work to be done to ensure we continue to make a positive, tangible and lasting difference.

“We are proud of the key strategic initiatives that we are targeting between 2022 to 2027 and we know they will evolve into the future.”

Over its history, Fremantle is proud of the contributions made to ensure the Club and the community are more sustainable.

Such contributions include:

  • A history of promoting and supporting Indigenous culture and communities to help reduce inequalities.
  • Promoting women in sport and advocating for leadership roles to encourage gender equality.
  • Supporting disadvantaged kids across WA through the delivery of health and well-being programs in the community.
  • Investing in a wide range of inclusive school-based education initiatives to promote learning opportunities.
  • Establishing the charitable Purple Hands Foundation (PHF).

The Club’s sustainability goals are embedded within the Club’s broader Strategic Plan and the Club is committed to continuing its growth as a sustainable organisation as it strives to meet its goal of Anchoring a Sustainable Future.
