Andrew Brayshaw being presented with the Leigh Matthews Trophy as the AFL Players Most Valuable Player.

The AFL Players Most Valuable Player has also earned his first All Australian jacket, named on the bench in the 2022 All Australian Team.

Brayshaw was one of two Freo Dockers vying for honours on the night, with Brennan Cox missing out after being named in the initial squad of 44.

The honours came in Brayshaw’s fifth season at just the age of 22.

In 2022, he averaged more than 29 disposals per game while breaking Fremantle’s tackle record in a home and away season with 139 – earning the tag as the best two-way runner in the game.

Speaking in Wednesday’s media conference, Senior Coach Justin Longmiur said he was proud to see both players recognised, highlighting their abilities to consistently perform at their best.

“It’s a great reward for effort. Both of them put in a tonne of work to get their bodies up to a level where they can compete at a high level week in and week out,” Longmuir said.

“That consistency has given them the honours they’ve got so far. Everyone’s been well aware of what Andy’s produced this year and that started years ago, but he put in the body of work in the off-season and he’s dragged his teammates along.

“It’s allowed him to compete this year and embrace the challenges that have confronted him. He’s been tagged a lot this year and he’s been able to work his way through that.

“Brennan’s done the same amount of work. The work he’s put in has allowed him to be out there week in and week out, which he probably hasn’t done in previous years.

“It’s allowed his talents to come to the fore even more. I’m proud of all of our players but those two get the individual recognition, which is great.”
