Debutant Megan Kauffman has proved she belongs at the top level after kicking her first AFLW goal in the round one loss to Brisbane at the GABBA on Sunday.

Kauffman, who was one of five AFLW debutants for Fremantle in the opening round, was drafted this season with pick 77 after transitioning from tennis to AFLW last year.

The ex-tennis player was a standout this pre-season for Fremantle after kicking all of the goals across two practice matches, and she continued that form in her first official hit out up forward finishing with nine disposals, two tackles and a goal.

The 25-year-old was able to get on the end of an Amy Franklin handball mid-way through the third quarter to snap her first goal.

“It was really exciting, I need to shout out to Amy Franklin,” Kauffman said.

“She got me the ball and was working hard to lay a few tackles and got it out to me.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her, so that was really exciting.”

Fellow debutant Amy Mulholland also kicked a goal on debut after taking an impressive mark inside 50 and kicked Freo’s first goal of the game with her first kick in league footy.

“That was awesome to see 'Mullas' get a goal and a great mark as well,” Kauffman said.

“It was awesome to see her out there and then finish with a goal.”

Kauffman believes that with the leadership of skipper Hayley Miller and midfielder Kiara Bowers, together with key lessons learned from the game, the group can bounce back in round two against Geelong in front of the Purple Army next Saturday at Fremantle Oval.

“The biggest thing (for us) was the takeaways and the lessons that we will put into training over the next week,” Kauffman said.

“We will look at how we can implement them and take them into our next game,” Kauffman said.

“Both (Miller and Bowers) their leadership and voice…they lead by example and that’s what you want.

“It was great to have (Bowers) and Miller both out there today.

“We’re super excited to get back and play on our home ground in front of our home fans.

“Obviously, it’s a big weekend for the Club and hopefully we can start it off with a win for a good weekend.”
