Fremantle will celebrate the Starlight Captains in Saturday’s Starlight Purple Haze Game with a specially designed jumper against Hawthorn on Saturday night at Optus Stadium, and the legendary Captain Geronimo can’t wait to be involved once again.
Captain Geronimo has been a Starlight Captain for 17 years and says sharing the Purple Haze Game with the Starlight Stars is one of the many perks of his role.
“I’ve been involved with at least 10 Purple Haze Games, whenever you get asked to do Purple Haze, it’s like ‘yes please, sign me up!’” Captain Geronimo said.
“There’s a lot of things I really love about it, firstly the atmosphere is always electric because Freo fans are the best!
“Being there with the kids and seeing them having such an awesome time out there with the players. We just get to be a part of it.
“We’re just tagging along for the fun of the day and we get to have fun with the kids and watching their faces as they see their heroes kicking goals and usually winning the game, it’s always a good time.”
The Starlight Captains are superheroes of fun, helping sick kids cope with the uncertainty and worry of hospitals and treatment.
Being able to have fun with the Starlight Captains helps sick kids feel happier, more confident and puts them in a better place to deal with pain and stress.
It’s a role Captain Geronimo has been performing for 17 years.
“It’s a very long time but I’ve loved every minute of it,” Captains Geronimo said.
“I think my favourite part is the hundreds upon hundreds of smiles that I see get created around children’s hospitals over the years.
“That and the mucking about. I love the mucking about it, it’s the best!”
Fans can help Starlight continue their important work by making a Fans Pledge for the game.
Proud match partner South32 will also be matching all pledges made before 11.59pm WST on Saturday 6 May dollar for dollar, up to the value of $50,000. Doubling every single one of your fan pledges to the final total, so be sure to dig deep!
Since the inaugural match in 2003 Fremantle fans, players and staff have raised more than $2 million to support seriously ill children and their families.
Tickets for Saturday night’s Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly presented by South32, are still available. Don’t miss your chance to join the Purple Haze and donate to one of the Club’s proudest traditions.
