Fremantle are set to have two first round selections in 2024 after completing a pick swap with Port Adelaide on Monday, the opening day of the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

Freo have received the Power’s 2024 first round selection in exchange for a 2023 second round selection (tied to North Melbourne compensation) and a future second round selection.

Head of Player Personnel David Walls said Fremantle considered the potential for significant movement of these picks when making the trade.

Both second round picks will be impacted by a range of factors, including the recent North Melbourne assistance package, free agent compensation, and likely 2023 first rounds bids on Jed Walter (Suns academy), Ethan Read (Suns academy), Jake Rogers (Suns academy), Jordan Croft (Bulldogs father-son) and Will McCabe (Hawks father-son).

“We are pleased we have been able to make a trade with Port Adelaide to secure an additional 2024 first round selection,” Walls said.

“In exchange, we have traded two second round selections that we expect to move back from their current position in the order.

“The second round selection tied to the North Melbourne compensation has already moved to 23 after the Tom Doedee free agent compensation to Adelaide, and the end of first round selection awarded in the North Melbourne assistance package.

“The pick could then move to approximately 28 after academy and father-son bids.

“The future second round selection will also move back two places with North Melbourne receiving two end of first round selections as part of the assistance package.

“It means we currently hold two first round selections in 2024, allowing us to add top-rated young talent in next year’s draft as our list matures and gains experience.”
